Maybe Just A Little
Out of Place?

This is where I share the wisdom that a granny, as an elder of the tribe, accumulates in her journey through life. The reach of my mind is wide, and sometimes even a little deep. Sometimes, like Whitman, I contradict myself. Sometimes I wax eloquent. Sometimes I fall on my face. Why not do it in public?

I saw this on the news and agreed with you that I fell in love with the beast. His expression was so soft and endearing.
Here in LA, because we've expanded so much into the coyote's natural habitat, it's not unusual to see them in very populated areas. They can be a danger to pets and small children, and even though people are warned not to feed them, they sometimes do.
My ex-husband had a "coyote encounter" once almost 20 years ago up near Vandenberg AFB. He was riding his bike out in a rural area, and suddenly noticed a coyote loping alongside him. Not knowing the coyote's intentions, he was understandably worried, so started speeding up. The coyote kept up with him. He then tried stopping and waving his arms and yelling. The coyote would back off but not far, and soon would be back running alongisde him. Finally he grabbed the water bottle off his bike and threw it at the coyote, who picked it up in his mouth and scampered off. I joked that he and his coyote buddies probably had a contest going to see who could collect the most stuff from bikers (this was a popular bike route).
Some time back I linked to this article about urban coyotes. Interestingly enough, urban coyotes have larger territorial ranges and tend to live longer than their country cousins.
I would like to think that the current news item shows how we must all share our environment, and how humans have invaded habitats that used to belong to other predators.
I agree - what a beautiful animal. I hope he's okay, but haven't heard anything...
