The effects of cold weather are just amazing. Look at the ice on this boat. Can you imagine going out on the sea in conditions that would lead to something like this? No, I can't either. The people who do this impress the hell out of me. Just so we can eat cod! Ice nearly two feet thick built up on the vessel as it fished for gray cod in Frederick Sound after a cold snap hit Southeast Alaska. Today's weather forecast calls for rain and a high temperature.

I used to work at a fish company, and I got to know some fishermen (and a couple of fisherwomen). Even without weather like that, it's a very hard and dangerous life, and often pays very little. One has to admire their fortitude.
I've watched some of those deep sea fishing shows and saw a lot of the same conditions. I just can't imagine doing that for a living....it's a treacherous way to earn a paycheck. Some crew members don't come back. I admire them beyond belief....and I thank them for all the great fish they bring to us. I LOVE fish...so I'll do my best to appreciate their hard work by eating a lot of it.
