Ice Is Nice

The large, blue chunk there is an iceberg. It was recently calved off the Mendenhall Glacier.

Amy Sherwin, a visitor service information assistant at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, kayaks near a wall of blue ice Sunday at the face of the Mendenhall Glacier. According to a park naturalist, the ice broke off Saturday morning and is thought to be one of the largest calvings at the glacier in recent years.

Wow, that's impressive. I've never seen "glacier guts" before. Quite pretty!

The color is fabulous! I really hate to see that happening, though.

Beautiful. But, scary, too.
